Portree is a bustling port and a thriving cultural centre. It is the island's main town and a popular destination for visitors. It boasts excellent leisure facilities, including a swimming pool, pony-trekking and boat cruises plus plenty of shopping opportunities. Portree is also the cultural hub for Skye. The town is a popular base for exploring the rest of the island.

What to do

• Look for otters and other wildlife, explore underwater, and visit the protected seal and bird colonies on the Seaprobe Atlantis Glass bottom boat trips (~45mins). Later head west to EileanDonan Castle, an icon of Scotland, and a backdrop to some famous movies
• 25mins drive North is the Kilt Rock, composed of basalt columns with its waterfall cascading over the cliffs and down into the sea below.
• 1 hour drive west is Neist Point Lighthouse, an excellent place to look for whales, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks. Enroute visit Dunvegan Castle ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 years
